Every holiday season, San Francisco gathers around a towering Monterey Cypress that has watched over Golden Gate Park for more than a century. Locals call it “Uncle John’s Tree,” a tribute to John McLaren, the superintendent who shaped the park into the iconic urban oasis it is today. Before he passed, McLaren had one final wish. He wanted this tree lit for the holidays. San Francisco delivered, and the tradition has lived on ever since. Today, it’s the city’s official Christmas tree and one of the most beloved holiday moments in Golden Gate Park. A more than 100-year-old cypress, a promise kept, and a community that shows up year after year. It doesn’t get more OnlyInSF.
