Ο διαγωνισμός ξεκινά την Παρασκευή με περισσότερα από 500 ανθρωποειδή ρομπότ σε 280 ομάδες από 16 χώρες, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των ΗΠΑ, της Γερμανίας και της Ιαπωνίας, που θα αγωνιστούν σε αθλήματα όπως το ποδόσφαιρο, το τρέξιμο και η πυγμαχία. Αυτό συμβαίνει καθώς η Κίνα έχει εντείνει τις προσπάθειες για την ανάπτυξη ανθρωποειδών ρομπότ που τροφοδοτούνται από τεχνητή νοημοσύνη.
Κατά τη διάρκεια της τελετής έναρξης, τα ρομπότ έκαναν επίδειξη ποδοσφαίρου και πυγμαχίας, μεταξύ άλλων αθλημάτων, με κάποιες επευφημίες και backflipping σαν να επρόκειτο για μια πραγματική αθλητική ημέρα.
Ένας ποδοσφαιριστής-ρομπότ σκόραρε γκολ μετά από μερικές προσπάθειες, με αποτέλεσμα ο τερματοφύλακας να πέσει στο έδαφος. Ένας άλλος παίκτης έπεσε αλλά σηκώθηκε χωρίς βοήθεια.
Τα ρομπότ έφτιαχναν επίσης μοντέρνα καπέλα και ρούχα παράλληλα με ανθρώπινα μοντέλα. Ένα μοντέλο ρομπότ έπεσε και αναγκάστηκε να το μεταφέρουν… από τη σκηνή δύο άνθρωποι.
Ομάδες από εταιρείες ρομποτικής και κινεζικά πανεπιστήμια, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των Πανεπιστημίων Tsinghua και Peking, αγωνίζονται στους αγώνες. Συμμετέχουν επίσης τρία γυμνάσια.
Η επίσημη εφημερίδα της Κίνας, People’s Daily, επικαλέστηκε έναν κυβερνητικό αξιωματούχο στο Πεκίνο ο οποίος δήλωσε ότι «κάθε ρομπότ που συμμετέχει δημιουργεί ιστορία».
Η εκδήλωση θα διαρκέσει τρεις ημέρες και θα ολοκληρωθεί την Κυριακή. Τα εισιτήρια που πωλούνται στο κοινό κυμαίνονται από 180 γιουάν (25 δολάρια) έως 580 (80 δολάρια).
